Some of the Best Beaches on the French Riviera Revealed

August 1, 2017 by Keith Alderson

Saint Tropez is the meeting place of the rich and famous, but also of regular tourists. Many people opt for St Tropez yacht rentals to rub elbows with the rich and famous. One of the reasons for this is that the beaches in St Tropez are absolutely fantastic. So what are those beaches?

  1. Pampelonne Plage

Pampelonne Plage is by far the best of the beaches, even though it is actually just outside St Tropez. It is a stretch of beach some 5km in length, offering a beautiful backdrop to some of Frances greatest beauty. Many people arrive here on private yachts and some even with a helicopter! Of course, you can simply drive there as well, and there is even a shuttle bus, although you can’t really count on it being on time. Best of all, using the  beach is completely free, unless you want to hire a lounger.

  1. Plage des Salins

The Plage des Salins is a whole lot quieter than Pampelonne and has more of a local field. It is some 600m in lengths and the sand is really fine. It is not so crowded, even in the high season, perhaps because it is lined with pine trees! You can also head over to Plage Mouttes just around the corner, where you may even have the beach all to yourself. At Plage des Salins, there is just a single restaurant, Les Salins, which also hires out beach chairs.

  1. Plage des Canoubiers

This is quite close to the center of St Tropez itself. A small beach, at just some 200 meters, it is often very busy. However, you should be able to find a spot.

  1. Plage des Graniers

This is a really tiny beach, yet hugely popular. So much so, in fact, that you may struggle to find a space here.

  1. Plage Fontanette and Plage de la Ponche

These are two beaches within walking distance of the town center. They are adjoined, which means it is easy enough to check whether there is space at either of them. Don’t expect privacy, however, since these beaches are busy.

  1. Plage de la Bouillabaisse

This is around half a kilometer in length and has a wealth of beach clubs on it. Strangely, buildings line this beach so it’s not a place to go for nature lovers. This is all about the sun, sea, and sand, and not about the character of St Tropez itself.

Plage Pompelonne is by far the most authentic St Tropez experience. However, if you fancy something a little bit different, be that quieter or busier, more natural or less natural, then there are lots of other options available to you as well. Of course, if you have chartered a yacht, you can simply see all these beaches from the comfort of your own deck, so whether or not you can get a space is not important. You can just swim down, enjoy a drink, and swim back!
