3 Reasons to Study a Library Science Degree

October 27, 2017 by Keith Alderson

Libraries have been a cornerstone of community learning for hundreds of years. The history of libraries stretches all the way back to antiquity, when libraries contained the entire breadth of human knowledge. Today they are still important hubs for educating the population and providing access to books and information.

The role of libraries has changed a great deal as time has gone on and they now serve a range of digital functions that would have been impossible before, such as providing internet access and searchable databases.

Working in a library is a unique experience and an opportunity to work in a job which provides a public service. Studying for a library degree will open the door to rewarding work in a variety of library environments.

Rewarding Employment

Libraries exist in a variety of forms, from the usual libraries we are all used to seeing in our local communities to libraries that are attached to universities and research institutions. Working in these environments will be quite unlike any other job you are likely to find, they require a variety of unique skills as well as good management and problem-solving abilities.

Some studies of library science graduates suggest that as many as 80% go from their degree in to related employment within a year. It can be a competitive field depending on what area you choose to specialise in, while some specific library sectors are shrinking and starting to experience widespread closures, other sectors are growing.

An Evolving Field

Working in community libraries is a very different experience compared to just a few years ago. This is because the range of services that such libraries offer has expanded greatly, moving from providing books and basic reference services, to offering internet access and other digital services.

E-books have become increasingly popular, particularly among young adults, and many libraries now operate a digital lending service which makes digital copies of books available for free. With libraries under more pressure and competition than ever before it is important that they embrace the opportunities that the digital world offers.

A Degree for Anyone

The range of environments that one can choose to work in after obtaining an online MMLIS degree are many and varied, consequently there is something in the field to match all skillsets and interests. By choosing to study an online MMLIS program you are able to study while simultaneously working another job.

The MMLIS is a degree worth studying for anyone who is passionate about learning and education and who wants to be at the forefront of delivering a vital public service. It is also a great degree choice for those who would prefer to work behind the scenes, assisting educational and research institutions in managing their archives and collections.

A library science degree is one of the most versatile yet accessible degree options. Few degrees offer the same breadth of opportunities both while studying and when finding employment. The opportunity to work in a range of environments, with room for career progression, makes the mmlis degree one of the best.
